15 mins, Animation, Sculpture and Screen-print on MirrorSaros is an eclipse cycle that was once predicted and calculated by King Mongkut(Rama IV) ‘The King of Siam's eclipse’. He acceded to the throne in 1851 which is one of the years in Saros 143 series. According to today's calculation from NASA the first Saros 143 series started from 1617 till 2897.
Saros Eclipse Series happens once every 18 years but every orbit produces a slight change which creates variations and makes us experience an eclipse every year , diverting into different routes not of the 143 canon.
This project focused on investigating collectives of history based on years that Saros 143 occurred in an attempt to metaphoric the branches of history that seem to have constant narratives but still differ and change their orbit depending on the perspectives of where and when we observed them similar to the orbit of solar eclipse. The collectives of history I explore includes.
A. 1617, Finspång witch trials’ in Sweden because of the term ‘witch-hunting’ was adopted in the Thai Political landscape.
B. 1851, The Accession Ceremony of King Mongkut and the photographic process of eclipse in Prussia which is the first occasion that an accurate photographic image of a solar eclipse was recorded.
C. 2371, The farest year in Saros 143 that the eclipse will occur nearest to Thailand.
D. 1833, Rama IV discovery of The Ram Khamhaeng Inscription
Saros Club 143 is a fictional secret club where the tyrants party and dictate the course of canonical history.
This appropriation of clubs as medium in this project is based on the history of Electronic Dance Music Culture(EDMC). In the early 1960s, Electronic Dance Music Culture was initiated with counterculture spirit as its core. The party was organized by collectives of people who seek liberation via dancing and experience electronic music. Later this concept was occupied by corporate and capitalist to create exclusive clubs, fancy society and stardom that exist till nowadays. Coincidentally in 1990,
the first legal club that opened for 24-hour in the UK was named
‘The Eclipse’
